CENTRAL CROSSING GIRLS BASKETBALL

2008-2009 Girls Basketball Schedules

Central Crossing Athletic Department announced today that they have hired Sarah Kuhner as their new Head Girls’ Basketball Coach.

Kuhner, a native of Pickerington, OH, has spent the past four years as the Junior Varsity and Assistant Varsity Girl’s Basketball Coach at Pickerington Central High School. As the Junior Varsity Coach, she led the team to a respectable 32–8 overall record being crowned the league champions in 2007-08 (10-0 record). Prior to that, Kuhner spent two years (2001-03) as Junior Varsity Girl’s Coach at Licking Heights High School.

“We are excited that Sarah is now a member of our athletic department,” Central Crossing High School Athletic Director Zoraba Ross said. “She’s passionate about the game, she’s a tireless worker, and she brings a rich basketball tradition with her. We are fortunate to have added such a quality person and coach to our staff. We are very confident she will be a great coach and asset to our department, student-athletes and the community.”

As a coach, Kuhner believes, “it is the head coach and staff’s duty to help each individual player reach her full potential as a person and student-athlete. It is also the goal of the head coach and staff to make every student-athlete who comes into the program an individual who is going to contribute positively to society.”

Defensively, man to man would be the primary defense utilized by Kuhner’s teams. Student-athletes will be taught and master proper spacing, basic man to man principles (help, denial, on ball), how to use their hands and move their feet.

In the post, they will learn and master all aspects of post defense (three quarter high side, three quarter low side, playing behind, and full frontal positions). The type of defense will change from game to game depending on the strengths of the opponents post players.

As a team, her teams will extend the floor in a variety of pressure defenses. Opponents will be pressed until they prove they can effectively beat the press. Thus, Kuhner’s teams will be conditioned properly and be in great shape.

Offensively, she believes teams that are successful on the defensive end will get fast break opportunities for easy baskets on the offensive end of the ball. As a team, limiting turnovers, crashing the boards hard for second and third shots, ball reversal and getting spot shooters opportunities will be the focal points.

In the offensive transition game, Kuhner believes it is important her team has numbers when they attack their shots. Thus, having more offensive than defensive players is the key to attack the basket.

No stranger to the collegiate game, Kuhner played 2 years at Allegheny College (Meadville, PA) and 2 years at Otterbein College (Westerville, OH), where she was a standout guard and post player. While at Otterbein College, she earned All Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) second-team, All OAC academic and Otterbein College Most Outstanding Female Athlete.

Understanding the valuable experience she acquired, she wants her student-athletes to be able to further their athletic and academic careers to the college level if they choose. She will support their decisions by making sure they qualify for the college recruiting process and will promote each student-athlete appropriately.

Kuhner received her BA in 2004 from Otterbein College and M.Ed in Educational Leadership from the University of Cincinnati in 2006.
